जाना जाता है। उपन्यास के क्षेत्र में उनके योगदान को देखकर बंगाल के विख्यात उपन्यासकार शरतचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय ने उन्हें उपन्यास सम्राट कहकर संबोधित किया था। प्रेमचंद ने हिन्दी कहानी और उपन्यास की एक ऐसी परंपरा का विकास किया जिसने पूरी सदी के साहित्य का मार्गदर्शन किया। आगामी एक पूरी पीढ़ी को गहराई तक प्रभावित कर प्रेमचंद ने साहित्य की यथार्थवादी परंपरा की नींव रखी। उनका लेखन हिन्दी साहित्य की एक ऐसी विरासत है जिसके बिना हिन्दी के विकास का अध्ययन अधूरा होगा। वे एक संवेदनशील लेखक, सचेत नागरिक, कुशल वक्ता तथा सुधी (विद्वान) संपादक थे। बीसवीं शती के पूर्वार्द्ध में, जब हिन्दी में तकनीकी सुविधाओं का अभाव था,उनका योगदान अतुलनीय है। प्रेमचंद के बाद जिन लोगों ने साहित्य को सामाजिक सरोकारों और प्रगतिशील मूल्यों के साथ आगे बढ़ाने का काम किया, उनमें यशपाल से लेकर मुक्तिबोध तक शामिल हैं। उनके पुत्र हिन्दी के प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार अमृतराय हैं जिन्होंने इन्हें कलम का सिपाही नाम दिया था।
जीवन परिचय
प्रेमचंद का जन्म वाराणसी के निकट लमही गाँव में हुआ था। उनकी माता का नाम आनन्दी देवी था तथा पिता मुंशी अजायबराय लमही में डाकमुंशी थे। उनकी शिक्षा का आरंभ उर्दू, फारसी से हुआ और जीवनयापन का अध्यापन से पढ़ने का शौक उन्हें बचपन से ही लग गया। 13 साल की उम्र में ही उन्होंने तिलिस्म-ए-होशरुबा पढ़ लिया और उन्होंने उर्दू के मशहूर रचनाकार रतननाथ 'शरसार', मिर्ज़ा हादी रुस्वा और मौलाना शरर के उपन्यासों से परिचय प्राप्त कर लिया । १८९८ में मैट्रिक की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण करने के बाद वे एक स्थानीय विद्यालय में शिक्षक नियुक्त हो गए। नौकरी के साथ ही उन्होंने पढ़ाई जारी रखी।१९१० में उन्होंने अंग्रेजी, दर्शन, फारसी और इतिहास लेकर इंटर पास किया और १९१९ में बी.ए. पास करने के बाद शिक्षा विभाग के इंस्पेक्टर पद पर नियुक्त हुए।
सात वर्ष की अवस्था में उनकी माता तथा चौदह वर्ष की अवस्था में पिता का देहान्त हो जाने के कारण उनका प्रारंभिक जीवन संघर्षमय रहा। उनका पहला विवाह उन दिनों की परंपरा के अनुसार पंद्रह साल की उम्र में हुआ जो सफल नहीं रहा। वे आर्य समाज से प्रभावित रहे जो उस समय का बहुत बड़ा धार्मिक और सामाजिक आंदोलन था। उन्होंने विधवा-विवाह का समर्थन किया और १९०६ में दूसरा विवाह अपनी प्रगतिशील परंपरा के अनुरूप बाल-विधवा शिवरानी देवी से किया। उनकी तीन संताने हुईं- श्रीपत राय, अमृत राय और कमला देवी श्रीवास्तव। १९१० में उनकी रचना सोज़े-वतन (राष्ट्र का विलाप) के लिए हमीरपुर के जिला कलेक्टर ने तलब किया और उन पर जनता को भड़काने का आरोप लगाया। सोजे-वतन की सभी प्रतियाँ जब्त कर नष्ट कर दी गईं। कलेक्टर ने नवाबराय को हिदायत दी कि अब वे कुछ भी नहीं लिखेंगे, यदि लिखा तो जेल भेज दिया जाएगा। इस समय तक प्रेमचंद, धनपत राय नाम से लिखते थे। उर्दू में प्रकाशित होने वाली ज़माना पत्रिका के सम्पादक और उनके अजीज दोस्त मुंशी दयानारायण निगम ने उन्हें प्रेमचंद नाम से लिखने की सलाह दी। इसके बाद वे प्रेमचन्द के नाम से लिखने लगे। उन्होंने आरंभिक लेखन ज़माना पत्रिका में ही किया। जीवन के अंतिम दिनों में वे गंभीर रूप से बीमार पड़े। उनका उपन्यास मंगलसूत्र पूरा नहीं हो सका और लम्बी बीमारी के बाद ८ अक्टूबर १९३६ को उनका निधन हो गया। उनका अंतिम उपन्यास मंगल सूत्र उनके पुत्र अमृत ने पूरा किया।
कार्यक्षेत्र
प्रेमचंद आधुनिक हिन्दी कहानी के पितामह और उपन्यास सम्राट माने जाते हैं। यों तो उनके साहित्यिक जीवन का आरंभ १९०१ से हो चुका था पर उनकी पहली हिन्दी कहानी सरस्वती पत्रिका के दिसम्बर अंक में १९१५ में सौत नाम से प्रकाशित हुई और १९३६ में अंतिम कहानी कफन नाम से प्रकाशित हुई। बीस वर्षों की इस अवधि में उनकी कहानियों के अनेक रंग देखने को मिलते हैं। उनसे पहले हिंदी में काल्पनिक, एय्यारी और पौराणिक धार्मिक रचनाएं ही की जाती थी। प्रेमचंद ने हिंदी में यथार्थवाद की शुरूआत की। " भारतीय साहित्य का बहुत सा विमर्श जो बाद में प्रमुखता से उभरा चाहे वह दलित साहित्य हो या नारी साहित्य उसकी जड़ें कहीं गहरे प्रेमचंद के साहित्य में दिखाई देती हैं।" प्रेमचंद के लेख 'पहली रचना' के अनुसार उनकी पहली रचना अपने मामा पर लिखा व्यंग्य थी, जो अब अनुपलब्ध है। उनका पहला उपलब्ध लेखन उनका उर्दू उपन्यास 'असरारे मआबिद' है। प्रेमचंद का दूसरा उपन्यास 'हमखुर्मा व हमसवाब' जिसका हिंदी रूपांतरण 'प्रेमा' नाम से 1907 में प्रकाशित हुआ। इसके बाद प्रेमचंद का पहला कहानी संग्रह सोज़े-वतन नाम से आया जो १९०८ में प्रकाशित हुआ। सोज़े-वतन यानी देश का दर्द। देशभक्ति की भावना से ओतप्रोत होने के कारण इस पर अंग्रेज़ी सरकार ने रोक लगा दी और इसके लेखक को भविष्य में इस तरह का लेखन न करने की चेतावनी दी। इसके कारण उन्हें नाम बदलकर लिखना पड़ा। 'प्रेमचंद' नाम से उनकी पहली कहानी बड़े घर की बेटी ज़माना पत्रिका के दिसम्बर १९१० के अंक में प्रकाशित हुई। मरणोपरांत उनकी कहानियाँ मानसरोवर नाम से 8 खंडों में प्रकाशित हुई। कथा सम्राट प्रेमचन्द का कहना था कि साहित्यकार देशभक्ति और राजनीति के पीछे चलने वाली सच्चाई नहीं बल्कि उसके आगे मशाल दिखाती हुई चलने वाली सच्चाई है। यह बात उनके साहित्य में उजागर हुई है। १९२१ में उन्होंने महात्मा गांधी के आह्वान पर अपनी नौकरी छोड़ दी। कुछ महीने मर्यादा पत्रिका का संपादन भार संभाला, छह साल तक माधुरी नामक पत्रिका का संपादन किया, १९३० में बनारस से अपना मासिक पत्र हंस शुरू किया और १९३२ के आरंभ में जागरण नामक एक साप्ताहिक और निकाला। उन्होंने लखनऊ में १९३६ में अखिल भारतीय प्रगतिशील लेखक संघ के सम्मेलन की अध्यक्षता की। उन्होंने मोहन दयाराम भवनानी की अजंता सिनेटोन कंपनी में कहानी-लेखक की नौकरी भी की। १९३४ में प्रदर्शित मजदूर नामक फिल्म की कथा लिखी और कंट्रेक्ट की साल भर की अवधि पूरी किये बिना ही दो महीने का वेतन छोड़कर बनारस भाग आये क्योंकि बंबई (आधुनिक मुंबई) का और उससे भी ज़्यादा वहाँ की फिल्मी दुनिया का हवा-पानी उन्हें रास नहीं आया। उन्होंने मूल रूप से हिंदी में 1915 से कहानियां लिखना और 1918 (सेवासदन) से उपन्यास लिखना शुरू किया। प्रेमचंद ने कुल करीब तीन सौ कहानियाँ, लगभग एक दर्जन उपन्यास और कई लेख लिखे। उन्होंने कुछ नाटक भी लिखे और कुछ अनुवाद कार्य भी किया। प्रेमचंद के कई साहित्यिक कृतियों का अंग्रेज़ी, रूसी, जर्मन सहित अनेक भाषाओं में अनुवाद हुआ। गोदान उनकी कालजयी रचना है। कफन उनकी अंतिम कहानी मानी जाती है। उन्होंने हिंदी और उर्दू में पूरे अधिकार से लिखा। उनकी अधिकांश रचनाएं मूल रूप से उर्दू में लिखी गई हैं लेकिन उनका प्रकाशन हिंदी में पहले हुआ। तैंतीस वर्षों के रचनात्मक जीवन में वे साहित्य की ऐसी विरासत सौंप गए जो गुणों की दृष्टि से अमूल्य है और आकार की दृष्टि से असीमीत।
कृतियाँ
प्रेमचन्द की रचना-दृष्टि विभिन्न साहित्य रूपों में प्रवृत्त हुई। बहुमुखी प्रतिभा संपन्न प्रेमचंद ने उपन्यास, कहानी, नाटक, समीक्षा, लेख, सम्पादकीय, संस्मरण आदि अनेक विधाओं में साहित्य की सृष्टि की। प्रमुखतया उनकी ख्याति कथाकार के तौर पर हुई और अपने जीवन काल में ही वे ‘उपन्यास सम्राट’ की उपाधि से सम्मानित हुए। उन्होंने कुल १५ उपन्यास, ३०० से कुछ अधिक कहानियाँ, ३ नाटक, १० अनुवाद, ७ बाल-पुस्तकें तथा हजारों पृष्ठों के लेख, सम्पादकीय, भाषण, भूमिका, पत्र आदि की रचना की लेकिन जो यश और प्रतिष्ठा उन्हें उपन्यास और कहानियों से प्राप्त हुई, वह अन्य विधाओं से प्राप्त न हो सकी। यह स्थिति हिन्दी और उर्दू भाषा दोनों में समान रूप से दिखायी देती है।
उपन्यास
प्रेमचंद के उपन्यास न केवल हिन्दी उपन्यास साहित्य में बल्कि संपूर्ण भारतीय साहित्य में मील के पत्थर हैं। प्रेमचन्द कथा-साहित्य में उनके उपन्यासकार का आरम्भ पहले होता है। उनका पहला उर्दू उपन्यास (अपूर्ण) ‘असरारे मआबिद उर्फ़ देवस्थान रहस्य’ उर्दू साप्ताहिक ‘'आवाज-ए-खल्क़'’ में ८ अक्टूबर, १९०३ से १ फरवरी, १९०५ तक धारावाहिक रूप में प्रकाशित हुआ। उनका दूसरा उपन्यास 'हमखुर्मा व हमसवाब' जिसका हिंदी रूपांतरण 'प्रेमा' नाम से 1907 में प्रकाशित हुआ। चूंकि प्रेमचंद मूल रूप से उर्दू के लेखक थे और उर्दू से हिंदी में आए थे, इसलिए उनके सभी आरंभिक उपन्यास मूल रूप से उर्दू में लिखे गए और बाद में उनका हिन्दी तर्जुमा किया गया। उन्होंने 'सेवासदन' (1918) उपन्यास से हिंदी उपन्यास की दुनिया में प्रवेश किया। यह मूल रूप से उन्होंने 'बाजारे-हुस्न' नाम से पहले उर्दू में लिखा लेकिन इसका हिंदी रूप 'सेवासदन' पहले प्रकाशित कराया। 'सेवासदन' एक नारी के वेश्या बनने की कहानी है। डॉ रामविलास शर्मा के अनुसार 'सेवासदन' में व्यक्त मुख्य समस्या भारतीय नारी की पराधीनता है। इसके बाद किसान जीवन पर उनका पहला उपन्यास 'प्रेमाश्रम' (1921) आया। इसका मसौदा भी पहले उर्दू में 'गोशाए-आफियत' नाम से तैयार हुआ था लेकिन 'सेवासदन' की भांति इसे पहले हिंदी में प्रकाशित कराया। 'प्रेमाश्रम' किसान जीवन पर लिखा हिंदी का संभवतः पहला उपन्यास है। यह अवध के किसान आंदोलनों के दौर में लिखा गया। इसके बाद 'रंगभूमि' (1925), 'कायाकल्प' (1926), 'निर्मला' (1927), 'गबन' (1931), 'कर्मभूमि' (1932) से होता हुआ यह सफर 'गोदान' (1936) तक पूर्णता को प्राप्त हुआ। रंगभूमि में प्रेमचंद एक अंधे भिखारी सूरदास को कथा का नायक बनाकर हिंदी कथा साहित्य में क्रांतिकारी बदलाव का सूत्रपात कर चुके थे। गोदान का हिंदी साहित्य ही नहीं, विश्व साहित्य में महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है। इसमें प्रेमचंद की साहित्य संबंधी विचारधारा 'आदर्शोन्मुख यथार्थवाद' से 'आलोचनात्मक यथार्थवाद' तक की पूर्णता प्राप्त करती है। एक सामान्य किसान को पूरे उपन्यास का नायक बनाना भारतीय उपन्यास परंपरा की दिशा बदल देने जैसा था। सामंतवाद और पूंजीवाद के चक्र में फंसकर हुई कथानायक होरी की मृत्यु पाठकों के जहन को झकझोर कर रख जाती है। किसान जीवन पर अपने पिछले उपन्यासों 'प्रेमाश्रम' और 'कर्मभूमि' में प्रेमंचद यथार्थ की प्रस्तुति करते-करते उपन्यास के अंत तक आदर्श का दामन थाम लेते हैं। लेकिन गोदान का कारुणिक अंत इस बात का गवाह है कि तब तक प्रेमचंद का आदर्शवाद से मोहभंग हो चुका था। यह उनकी आखिरी दौर की कहानियों में भी देखा जा सकता है। 'मंगलसूत्र' प्रेमचंद का अधूरा उपन्यास है। प्रेमचंद के उपन्यासों का मूल कथ्य भारतीय ग्रामीण जीवन था। प्रेमचंद ने हिंदी उपन्यास को जो ऊँचाई प्रदान की, वह परवर्ती उपन्यासकारों के लिए एक चुनौती बनी रही। प्रेमचंद के उपन्यास भारत और दुनिया की कई भाषाओं में अनुदित हुए, खासकर उनका सर्वाधिक चर्चित उपन्यास गोदान।

कहानी
उनकी अधिकतर कहानियोँ में निम्न व मध्यम वर्ग का चित्रण है। डॉ॰ कमलकिशोर गोयनका ने प्रेमचंद की संपूर्ण हिंदी-उर्दू कहानी को प्रेमचंद कहानी रचनावली नाम से प्रकाशित कराया है। उनके अनुसार प्रेमचंद ने कुल ३०१ कहानियाँ लिखी हैं जिनमें ३ अभी अप्राप्य हैं। प्रेमचंद का पहला कहानी संग्रह सोज़े वतन नाम से जून १९०८ में प्रकाशित हुआ। इसी संग्रह की पहली कहानी दुनिया का सबसे अनमोल रतन को आम तौर पर उनकी पहली प्रकाशित कहानी माना जाता रहा है। डॉ॰ गोयनका के अनुसार कानपुर से निकलने वाली उर्दू मासिक पत्रिका ज़माना के अप्रैल अंक में प्रकाशित सांसारिक प्रेम और देश-प्रेम (इश्के दुनिया और हुब्बे वतन) वास्तव में उनकी पहली प्रकाशित कहानी है।
उनके जीवन काल में कुल नौ कहानी संग्रह प्रकाशित हुए- सोज़े वतन, 'सप्त सरोज', 'नवनिधि', 'प्रेमपूर्णिमा', 'प्रेम-पचीसी', 'प्रेम-प्रतिमा', 'प्रेम-द्वादशी', 'समरयात्रा', 'मानसरोवर' : भाग एक व दो और 'कफन'। उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उनकी कहानियाँ 'मानसरोवर' शीर्षक से 8 भागों में प्रकाशित हुई। प्रेमचंद साहित्य के मु्दराधिकार से मुक्त होते ही विभिन्न संपादकों और प्रकाशकों ने प्रेमचंद की कहानियों के संकलन तैयार कर प्रकाशित कराए। उनकी कहानियों में विषय और शिल्प की विविधता है। उन्होंने मनुष्य के सभी वर्गों से लेकर पशु-पक्षियों तक को अपनी कहानियों में मुख्य पात्र बनाया है। उनकी कहानियों में किसानों, मजदूरों, स्त्रियों, दलितों, आदि की समस्याएं गंभीरता से चित्रित हुई हैं। उन्होंने समाजसुधार, देशप्रेम, स्वाधीनता संग्राम आदि से संबंधित कहानियाँ लिखी हैं। उनकी ऐतिहासिक कहानियाँ तथा प्रेम संबंधी कहानियाँ भी काफी लोकप्रिय साबित हुईं। प्रेमचंद की प्रमुख कहानियों में ये नाम लिये जा सकते हैं-
'पंच परमेश्वर', 'गुल्ली डंडा', 'दो बैलों की कथा', 'ईदगाह', 'बड़े भाई साहब', 'पूस की रात', 'कफन', 'ठाकुर का कुआँ', 'सद्गति', 'बूढ़ी काकी', 'तावान', 'विध्वंस', 'दूध का दाम', 'मंत्र' आदि।
नाटक
प्रेमचंद ने संग्राम (1923), कर्बला (1924) और प्रेम की वेदी (1933) नाटकों की रचना की। ये नाटक शिल्प और संवेदना के स्तर पर अच्छे हैं लेकिन उनकी कहानियों और उपन्यासों ने इतनी ऊँचाई प्राप्त कर ली थी कि नाटक के क्षेत्र में प्रेमचंद को कोई खास सफलता नहीं मिली। ये नाटक वस्तुतः संवादात्मक उपन्यास ही बन गए हैं।
लेख/निबंध
प्रेमचंद एक संवेदनशील कथाकार ही नहीं, सजग नागरिक व संपादक भी थे। उन्होंने 'हंस', 'माधुरी', 'जागरण' आदि पत्र-पत्रिकाओं का संपादन करते हुए व तत्कालीन अन्य सहगामी साहित्यिक पत्रिकाओं 'चाँद', 'मर्यादा', 'स्वदेश' आदि में अपनी साहित्यिक व सामाजिक चिंताओं को लेखों या निबंधों के माध्यम से अभिव्यक्त किया। अमृतराय द्वारा संपादित 'प्रेमचंद : विविध प्रसंग' (तीन भाग) वास्तव में प्रेमचंद के लेखों का ही संकलन है। प्रेमचंद के लेख प्रकाशन संस्थान से 'कुछ विचार' शीर्षक से भी छपे हैं। प्रेमचंद के मशहूर लेखों में निम्न लेख शुमार होते हैं- साहित्य का उद्देश्य, पुराना जमाना नया जमाना, स्वराज के फायदे, कहानी कला (1,2,3), कौमी भाषा के विषय में कुछ विचार, हिंदी-उर्दू की एकता, महाजनी सभ्यता, उपन्यास, जीवन में साहित्य का स्थान आदि।
अनुवाद
प्रेमचंद एक सफल अनुवादक भी थे। उन्होंने दूसरी भाषाओं के जिन लेखकों को पढ़ा और जिनसे प्रभावित हुए, उनकी कृतियों का अनुवाद भी किया। 'टॉलस्टॉय की कहानियाँ' (1923), गाल्सवर्दी के तीन नाटकों का हड़ताल (1930), चाँदी की डिबिया (1931) और न्याय (1931) नाम से अनुवाद किया। आजाद-कथा (उर्दू से, रतननाथ सरशार), पिता के पत्र पुत्री के नाम (अंग्रेजी से, जवाहरलाल नेहरू) उनके द्वारा रतननाथ सरशार के उर्दू उपन्यास फसान-ए-आजाद का हिंदी अनुवाद आजाद कथा बहुत मशहूर हुआ।

समालोचना
प्रेमचन्द उर्दू का संस्कार लेकर हिन्दी में आए थे और हिन्दी के महान लेखक बने। हिन्दी को अपना खास मुहावरा और खुलापन दिया। कहानी और उपन्यास दोनो में युगान्तरकारी परिवर्तन किए। उन्होने साहित्य में सामयिकता प्रबल आग्रह स्थापित किया। आम आदमी को उन्होंने अपनी रचनाओं का विषय बनाया और उसकी समस्याओं पर खुलकर कलम चलाते हुए उन्हें साहित्य के नायकों के पद पर आसीन किया। प्रेमचंद से पहले हिंदी साहित्य राजा-रानी के किस्सों, रहस्य-रोमांच में उलझा हुआ था। प्रेमचंद ने साहित्य को सच्चाई के धरातल पर उतारा। उन्होंने जीवन और कालखंड की सच्चाई को पन्ने पर उतारा। वे सांप्रदायिकता, भ्रष्टाचार, ज़मींदारी, कर्ज़खोरी, ग़रीबी, उपनिवेशवाद पर आजीवन लिखते रहे। प्रेमचन्द की ज़्यादातर रचनाएँ उनकी ही ग़रीबी और दैन्यता की कहानी कहती है। ये भी गलत नहीं है कि वे आम भारतीय के रचनाकार थे। उनकी रचनाओं में वे नायक हुए, जिसे भारतीय समाज अछूत और घृणित समझा था। उन्होंने सरल, सहज और आम बोल-चाल की भाषा का उपयोग किया और अपने प्रगतिशील विचारों को दृढ़ता से तर्क देते हुए समाज के सामने प्रस्तुत किया। १९३६ में प्रगतिशील लेखक संघ के पहले सम्मेलन की अध्यक्षता करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि लेखक स्वभाव से प्रगतिशील होता है और जो ऐसा नहीं है वह लेखक नहीं है। प्रेमचंद हिन्दी साहित्य के युग प्रवर्तक हैं। उन्होंने हिन्दी कहानी में आदर्शोन्मुख यथार्थवाद की एक नई परंपरा शुरू की।
प्रेमचंद के जीवन संबंधी विवाद
इतने महान रचनाकार होने के बावजूद प्रेमचंद का जीवन आरोपों से मुक्त नहीं है। प्रेमचंद के अध्येता कमलकिशोर गोयनका ने अपनी पुस्तक 'प्रेमचंद : अध्ययन की नई दिशाएं' में प्रेमचंद के जीवन पर कुछ आरोप लगाकर उनके साहित्य का महत्व कम करने की कोशिश की। प्रेमचंद पर लगे मुख्य आरोप हैं- प्रेमचंद ने अपनी पहली पत्नी को बिना वजह छोड़ा और दूसरे विवाह के बाद भी उनके अन्य किसी महिला से संबंध रहे (जैसा कि शिवरानी देवी ने 'प्रेमचंद घर में' में उद्धृत किया है), प्रेमचंद ने 'जागरण विवाद' में विनोदशंकर व्यास के साथ धोखा किया, प्रेमचंद ने अपनी प्रेस के वरिष्ठ कर्मचारी प्रवासीलाल वर्मा के साथ धोखाधडी की, प्रेमचंद की प्रेस में मजदूरों ने हड़ताल की, प्रेमचंद ने अपनी बेटी के बीमार होने पर झाड़-फूंक का सहारा लिया आदि। कमलकिशोर गोयनका द्वारा लगाए गए ये आरोप प्रेमचंद के जीवन का एक पक्ष जरूर हमारे सामने लाते हैं जिसमें उनकी इंसानी कमजोरियों जाहिर होती हैं लेकिन उनके व्यापक साहित्य के मूल्यांकन पर इन आरोपों का कोई असर नहीं पड़ पाया है। प्रेमचंद्र को लोग आज उनकी काबिलियत की वजह से याद करते हैं जो विवादों को बहुत कम जगह देती है।
मुंशी के विषय में विवाद
प्रेमचंद को प्रायः "मुंशी प्रेमचंद" के नाम से जाना जाता है। प्रेमचंद के नाम के साथ 'मुंशी' कब और कैसे जुड़ गया? इस विषय में अधिकांश लोग यही मान लेते हैं कि प्रारम्भ में प्रेमचंद अध्यापक रहे। अध्यापकों को प्राय: उस समय मुंशी जी कहा जाता था। इसके अतिरिक्त कायस्थों के नाम के पहले सम्मान स्वरूप 'मुंशी' शब्द लगाने की परम्परा रही है। संभवत: प्रेमचंद जी के नाम के साथ मुंशी शब्द जुड़कर रूढ़ हो गया। प्रोफेसर शुकदेव सिंह के अनुसार प्रेमचंद जी ने अपने नाम के आगे 'मुंशी' शब्द का प्रयोग स्वयं कभी नहीं किया। उनका यह भी मानना है कि मुंशी शब्द सम्मान सूचक है, जिसे प्रेमचंद के प्रशंसकों ने कभी लगा दिया होगा। यह तथ्य अनुमान पर आधारित है। लेकिन प्रेमचंद के नाम के साथ मुंशी विशेषण जुड़ने का प्रामाणिक कारण यह है कि 'हंस' नामक पत्र प्रेमचंद एवं 'कन्हैयालाल मुंशी' के सह संपादन में निकलता था। जिसकी कुछ प्रतियों पर कन्हैयालाल मुंशी का पूरा नाम न छपकर मात्र 'मुंशी' छपा रहता था साथ ही प्रेमचंद का नाम इस प्रकार छपा होता था- (हंस की प्रतियों पर देखा जा सकता है)। संपादक मुंशी, प्रेमचंद 'हंस के संपादक प्रेमचंद तथा कन्हैयालाल मुंशी थे। परन्तु कालांतर में पाठकों ने 'मुंशी' तथा 'प्रेमचंद' को एक समझ लिया और 'प्रेमचंद'- 'मुंशी प्रेमचंद' बन गए। यह स्वाभाविक भी है। सामान्य पाठक प्राय: लेखक की कृतियों को पढ़ता है, नाम की सूक्ष्मता को नहीं देखा करता। आज प्रेमचंद का मुंशी अलंकरण इतना रूढ़ हो गया है कि मात्र 'मुंशी' से ही प्रेमचंद का बोध हो जाता है तथा 'मुंशी' न कहने से प्रेमचंद का नाम अधूरा-अधूरा सा लगता है।
विरासत
प्रेमचंद ने अपनी कला के शिखर पर पहुँचने के लिए अनेक प्रयोग किए। जिस युग में प्रेमचंद ने कलम उठाई थी, उस समय उनके पीछे ऐसी कोई ठोस विरासत नहीं थी और न ही विचार और प्रगतिशीलता का कोई मॉडल ही उनके सामने था । लेकिन होते-होते उन्होंने गोदान जैसे कालजयी उपन्यास की रचना की जो कि एक आधुनिक क्लासिक माना जाता है। उन्होंने चीजों को खुद गढ़ा और खुद आकार दिया। जब भारत का स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन चल रहा था तब उन्होंने कथा साहित्य द्वारा हिंदी और उर्दू दोनों भाषाओं को जो अभिव्यक्ति दी उसने सियासी सरगर्मी को, जोश को और आंदोलन को सभी को उभारा और उसे ताक़तवर बनाया और इससे उनका लेखन भी ताक़तवर होता गया। प्रेमचंद इस अर्थ में निश्चित रूप से हिंदी के पहले प्रगतिशील लेखक कहे जा सकते हैं। १९३६ में उन्होंने प्रगतिशील लेखक संघ के पहले सम्मेलन को सभापति के रूप में संबोधन किया था। उनका यही भाषण प्रगतिशील आंदोलन के घोषणा पत्र का आधार बना। प्रेमचंद ने हिन्दी में कहानी की एक परंपरा को जन्म दिया और एक पूरी पीढ़ी उनके कदमों पर आगे बढ़ी, ५०-६० के दशक में रेणु, नागार्जुन औऱ इनके बाद श्रीनाथ सिंह ने ग्रामीण परिवेश की कहानियाँ लिखी हैं, वो एक तरह से प्रेमचंद की परंपरा के तारतम्य में आती हैं।
प्रेमचंद एक क्रांतिकारी रचनाकार थे, उन्होंने न केवल देशभक्ति बल्कि समाज में व्याप्त अनेक कुरीतियों को देखा और उनको कहानी के माध्यम से पहली बार लोगों के समक्ष रखा। उन्होंने उस समय के समाज की जो भी समस्याएँ थीं उन सभी को चित्रित करने की शुरुआत कर दी थी। उसमें दलित भी आते हैं, नारी भी आती हैं। ये सभी विषय आगे चलकर हिन्दी साहित्य के बड़े विमर्श बने। प्रेमचंद हिन्दी सिनेमा के सबसे अधिक लोकप्रिय साहित्यकारों में से हैं। सत्यजित राय ने उनकी दो कहानियों पर यादगार फ़िल्में बनाईं। १९७७ में शतरंज के खिलाड़ी और १९८१ में सद्गति। उनके देहांत के दो वर्षों बाद के सुब्रमण्यम ने १९३८ में सेवासदन उपन्यास पर फ़िल्म बनाई जिसमें सुब्बालक्ष्मी ने मुख्य भूमिका निभाई थी। १९७७ में मृणाल सेन ने प्रेमचंद की कहानी कफ़न पर आधारित ओका ऊरी कथा नाम से एक तेलुगू फ़िल्म बनाई जिसको सर्वश्रेष्ठ तेलुगू फ़िल्म का राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार भी मिला। १९६३ में गोदान और १९६६ में गबन उपन्यास पर लोकप्रिय फ़िल्में बनीं। १९८० में उनके उपन्यास पर बना टीवी धारावाहिक निर्मला भी बहुत लोकप्रिय हुआ था।
प्रेमचंद संबंधी नए अध्ययन
हिंदी साहित्य व आलोचना में प्रेमचंद को प्रतिष्ठित करने का श्रेय डॉ॰ रामविलास शर्मा को दिया जाता है परन्तु यह एक ग़लत धारणा है। दरअसल एक कहानीकार और उपन्यासकार के रूप में प्रेमचंद की लोकप्रियता उनके जीवनकाल में ही इतनी ज़्यादा थी कि उन्हें 'उपन्यास सम्राट' कहा जाने लगा था। प्रेमचंद को स्थापित करने वाले उनके पाठक थे, आलोचक नहीं। प्रेमचंद के पत्रों को सहेजने का काम अमृतराय और मदनगोपाल ने किया। प्रेमचंद पर हुए नए अध्ययनों में कमलकिशोर गोयनका और डॉ॰ धर्मवीर का नाम उल्लेखनीय है। कमलकिशोर गोयनका ने प्रेमचंद के जीवन के कमजोर पक्षों को उजागर करने के साथ-साथ प्रेमचंद का अप्राप्य साहित्य (दो भाग) व 'प्रेमचंद विश्वकोश' (दो भाग) का संपादन भी किया है। डॉ॰ धर्मवीर ने दलित दृष्टि से प्रेमचंद साहित्य का मूलयांकन करते हुए प्रेमचंद : सामंत का मुंशी व प्रेमचंद की नीली आँखें नाम से पुस्तकें लिखी हैं।
पुरस्कार व सम्मान
प्रेमचंद की स्मृति में भारतीय डाकतार विभाग की ओर से ३१ जुलाई १९८० को उनकी जन्मशती के अवसर पर ३० पैसे मूल्य का एक डाक टिकट जारी किया गया। गोरखपुर के जिस स्कूल में वे शिक्षक थे, वहाँ प्रेमचंद साहित्य संस्थान की स्थापना की गई है। इसके बरामदे में एक भित्तिलेख है जिसका चित्र दाहिनी ओर दिया गया है। यहाँ उनसे संबंधित वस्तुओं का एक संग्रहालय भी है। जहाँ उनकी एक वक्षप्रतिमा भी है। प्रेमचंद की १२५वीं सालगिरह पर सरकार की ओर से घोषणा की गई कि वाराणसी से लगे इस गाँव में प्रेमचंद के नाम पर एक स्मारक तथा शोध एवं अध्ययन संस्थान बनाया जाएगा। प्रेमचंद की पत्नी शिवरानी देवी ने प्रेमचंद घर में नाम से उनकी जीवनी लिखी और उनके व्यक्तित्व के उस हिस्से को उजागर किया है, जिससे लोग अनभिज्ञ थे। यह पुस्तक १९४४ में पहली बार प्रकाशित हुई थी, लेकिन साहित्य के क्षेत्र में इसके महत्व का अंदाज़ा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि इसे दुबारा २००५ में संशोधित करके प्रकाशित की गई, इस काम को उनके ही नाती प्रबोध कुमार ने अंजाम दिया। इसका अंग्रेज़ी व हसन मंज़र का किया हुआ उर्दू अनुवाद भी प्रकाशित हुआ। उनके ही बेटे अमृत राय ने कलम का सिपाही नाम से पिता की जीवनी लिखी है। उनकी सभी पुस्तकों के अंग्रेज़ी व उर्दू रूपांतर तो हुए ही हैं, चीनी, रूसी आदि अनेक विदेशी भाषाओं में उनकी कहानियाँ लोकप्रिय हुई हैं।

ओलकोट्टहाद का बहुत बड़ा योगदान है. सन् 1875 के दौरान मेडम ब्लावास्त्सकी और कर्नल ओलकोट्टहाद ने अमेरिका के न्यूयार्क में थियोसोफिकल सोसायटी की स्थापना की थी. इन दोनों ने बौद्ध धर्म का काफी अध्ययन किया था मगर 1880 में ये श्रीलंका आये तो इन्होने वहां न सिर्फ स्वयं को बुद्धिष्ट घोषित किया बल्कि भिक्षु का वेश धारण किया. इन्होने श्रीलंका में 300 के ऊपर स्कूल खोले और बौद्ध धर्म की शिक्षा पर भारी काम किया. डेविड इनसे काफी प्रभावित हुए. बालक डेविड को पालि सीखने की प्रेरणा इन्हीं से मिली. यह वह समय था जब डेविड ने अपना नाम बदल कर *"अनागारिक धम्मपाल"* कर लिया था.
1891 में अनागारिक धम्मपाल ने भारत स्थित बौद्ध गया के महाबोधि महाविहार की यात्रा की.यह वही जगह है जहाँ सिद्धार्थ गोतम को बुद्धत्व की प्राप्ति हुई थी.वे देखकर हैरान रह गए की किस प्रकार से पुरोहित वर्ग ने बुद्ध की मूर्तियों को हिन्दू देवी-देवताओं की मूर्तियों में बदल दिया है. *इन विषमतावादियों ने तब बुद्ध महाविहार में बौद्धो को प्रवेश करने से भी निषेध कर रखा था*
भारत में बौद्ध धम्म और बौद्ध तीर्थ-स्थलों की दुर्दशा देखकर अनागारिक धम्मपाल को बेहद दुख हुआ. *बौद्ध धर्म स्थलों की बेहतरी के लिए इन्होने विश्व के कई बौद्ध देशों को पत्र लिखा.इन्होने इसके लिए सन् 1891 में महाबोधि सोसायटी की स्थापना की.* तब इसका हेड आफिस कोलंबो था. किंतु शीध्र ही इसे कोलकाता स्थानांतरित किया गया. महाबोधि सोसायटी की ओर से अनागारिक धम्मपाल ने एक सिविल सूट दायर किया जिसमें मांग की गई थी कि महाबोधि विहार और दूसरे तीन प्रसिद्ध बौद्ध स्थलों को बौद्धों को हस्तांतरित किया जाये. *इसी रिट का ही परिणाम था कि आज महाबोधि विहार में बौद्ध जा सकते हैं.* परंतु तब भी वहां तथाकथित हिन्दुओं का कब्जा आज भी है..
*यह अनागारिक धम्मपाल का ही प्रयास था कि कुशीनगर, जहाँ तथागत का महापरिनिर्वाण हुआ था फिर से बौद्ध जगत में दर्शनीय स्थल बन गया।
अनागारिक धम्मपाल ने अपने जीवन के 40 वर्षों में भारत, श्रीलंका और विश्व के कई देशों में बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार-प्रसार के बहुत से उपाय किये. इन्होने कई स्कूलों और अस्पतालों का निर्माण कराया. कई जगह इन्होने बौद्ध विहारों का निर्माण कराया. *सारनाथ का प्रसिद्ध महाविहार आपने ही बनवाया था.*
13 जुलाई 1931 को अनागरिक धम्मपाल बाकायदा बौद्ध भिक्षु बन गये इन्होने प्रव्रज्या ली.16 जनवरी 1933 को इनकी प्रव्रज्या पूर्ण हुई और इन्होने उपसंपदा ग्रहण की.. और फिर नाम पड़ा भिक्षु देवमित धर्मपाल. भारतीय भूमि में बौद्ध धर्म के इतने बड़े पुनरुद्धारक की 29 अप्रैल 1933 को 69 वर्ष की अवस्था में इस दुनिया से विदाई हो गयी..अर्थात इनका महाप्रयाण हो गया.
इनकी अस्थियां पत्थर के एक छोटे से स्तूप में मूलगंध कुटी विहार में पाशर्व में रखी गयी हैं।
अनागारिक धम्मपाल बौद्ध जगत के एक ख्याति प्राप्त व्यक्तित्व हैं..
बौद्ध धर्म के पुनर्उद्धारक..भारत में बौद्ध धर्म के पतन के हजारों साल बाद अनागारिक धम्मपाल ही वह व्यक्ति थे जिन्होंने न सिर्फ इस देश में बौद्ध धर्म का पुन: झंडा फहराया बल्कि एशिया, यूरोप और उत्तरी अमेरिका में इसके प्रचार-प्रसार के लिए अथक प्रयास किया.
